Emotional healing is needed on such a widescale level with what’s going on in the world right now. Life can take a toll on us, especially when we go through a crisis of any kind. Emotional scars are often left behind. If left unprocessed and unhealed, these scars can affect your life in many negative ways, including but not limited to, chronic illnesses, poor relationships, difficulty in everyday tasks, and further trauma.
By choosing to take control of our emotional healing we can avoid the health issues that have been proven to come from unhealed trauma. If you feel stuck right now, it could be that you haven’t processed some traumas, and everyone is going through emotional trauma right now with what’s going on in the world, learning how to do emotional healing could be the best thing you do right now.
If you’re ready to start living your best life, free from trauma, it’s time to start your emotional healing journey. There is no better time than now. Below, you will discover 7 things you can do to kickstart your emotional healing and reclaim your life today.
1. Pay attention to your body
You know your body better than anybody else. So, if you want to start feeling better, it’s important to pay attention to your body. By listening to how it is feeling, you’ll be able to identify what you need to do each day to make you feel better.
Start writing down what you do and how it makes you feel. This will give you the best idea of how to make yourself feel better when you’re suffering emotional distress. For us to do emotional healing and heal ourselves after trauma, we need to recognise what our body needs.
2. Acknowledge the trauma
Whilst you may think that the best thing to do to overcome trauma is to bury it and move on, it’s actually important to acknowledge it. If you’re dealing with trauma from childhood, for example, you’ll already know that burying it doesn’t work.
Acknowledge the trauma you’ve been through, or are going through. However, don’t dwell on it. Simply write down the negative experience and how it makes you feel. Analyse that and then practise self-compassion. Be with the trauma, processing it, but also do things that make you feel better. Self-care is a super important part of emotional healing.
3. Be kind to yourself
It’s really important to be kind to yourself when you’re on your emotional healing journey. You will go through a variety of emotions, and stages, and that’s completely normal, it’s good in fact because when we process our trauma that’s when we truly experience emotional healing. When we go through the stages, we grow. Being kind to yourself also means eating healthy and getting enough exercise. It means spending time doing the things you enjoy, having fun.
Taking “you time” each day will help to keep the mind more relaxed. Also, don’t forget your positive affirmations. We are often our biggest critics. So, start to switch any negative thinking about yourself, into a positive. If something negative or destructive pops into your mind, literally tell your brain to cancel that thought. Tell yourself that you are loved, you are enough. The more positive things you tell yourself, the easier your emotional healing journey will be.
4. Set healthy boundaries
It’s important to set healthy boundaries in life, especially for emotional healing. If you’re healing from past trauma, you may have developed the habit to try and please other people, or putting others before yourself for a peaceful life. However, failing to have boundaries can lead to a lot of unhappiness. Once you start setting boundaries and you feel the freeing feeling (after the hassle you may well get for now having boundaries), it becomes enjoyable to set boundaries, not scary, because you know that you are responsible for your life, and only doing things that make you happy. Boundaries are essential for emotional healing. You are not responsible for others, or their reactions to you saying no, by the way.
Look at your life and where boundaries could be set. Do you often say yes to things you want to say no to? If so, now’s the time to be firmer and recognise that it’s OK to say no. And if someone gets angry with you for saying no, or tries to manipulate it into a yes, should they really be close to you? We get to choose how other people treat us. So, if you have someone in your life who never respects your boundaries, maybe now is the time to start distancing yourself from them and remembering that no matter what, if no is right for you, the whole world can be telling you that yes is the “done thing” but, no is right for YOU right now. It’s time to do what’s right for YOU.
5. Believe in yourself
Do you currently believe in yourself? If not, it’s time to start working on that.
When you believe in yourself, you don’t tend to let the opinions of others bother you. You don’t have limitations and you’ll find it easier to heal from trauma without limitations and outside noise. Create small wins for yourself, and celebrate each small win. Because actually, they’re HUGE 🙂
6. Meditate
Meditation is beautiful because you can meditate no matter what your beliefs are. Take time to meditate, or if you’re unsure how to, choose a guided meditation. Meditation is a healthy coping mechanism for many of life’s ups and downs, and meditation is also a safe place to build yourself back up, to create yourself again. To find your true purpose. To heal.
7. Make sleep a number one priority
Finally, in order to heal emotionally, we need to feel energised, in control and relaxed. If you’re not getting enough sleep, it can lead to a wide range of emotional and physical issues. Make sleep a number one priority.
One of the best ways to do that is by making sure your bedroom promotes healthy sleep, ie no distractions, technology, or T.V. and according to Feng Shui, no mirror that you can see from your bed. Anything you can do to improve your sleep is going to make it easier for you to heal.
There are many ways to achieve emotional healing. The above are some of the most effective ways to start healing today. You don’t have to let past or current trauma rule your life. There truly is a solution for everyone. 💚
